FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I meet Dr Fernandez for a consult?
Dr Fernandez consults at three locations servicing the ACT, Far South Coast NSW and Cooma NSW. Patients in the ACT may be seen at the Calvary Bruce Private Consulting Suites and have their procedure at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital.
He also sees patients at his Upper Street rooms in Bega, NSW and at Bombala Street Surgery, Cooma NSW for public and private patients who wish to have their procedure done at South East Regional Hospital, Cooma Hospital, or Calvary Bruce Private Hospital.
What do I need for my appointment on the day?
In preparation for your appointment with Dr Fernandez, please have your Medicare card and any pension, health care concession or health fund card available. A referral letter from your GP is essential for us to triage your appointment appropriately and to facilitate a Medicare rebate back to you. The referral is usually received electronically from your GP practice. Previous operative, radiology and other relevant medical reports are often helpful but not essential.
Can I be seen sooner if I am with a health fund and wish to have my procedure at a private health facility?
Yes, please advise a staff member if you wish the utilize this option. Generally, patients with any of the following billing categories can be seen and have their procedure at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital, Canberra, fairly quickly if it is suitable to do so :
- Privately insured patients
- Insurance patients (Workers Compensation, Motor accidents, etc)
- Veteran Affairs patients
- Self-funded patients
- Overseas patients
I am not in a health fund but would like to explore the option of having my procedure at a private hospital
An increasing number of people are choosing to “Self-Insure” or pay for their own surgery, so they don’t have to wait. This is often a worthwhile investment as it means you can have your operation done straight away or whenever it suits you. This can allow you to get back to your work and sport as soon as possible.
Patients may be able to choose an admission at a private facility even if they do not have private health insurance.
Self-funded patients will be liable to pay the following:
- The gap between the Medicare benefit and any specialist’s charge.
- The gap for diagnostic services (medical imaging and laboratory testing). However some of these services may be bulk billed to Medicare.
- Hospital accommodation fees (bed charge)
- Surgically implanted prostheses
- Other services like complex post-operative wound dressings
Essentially this means you must meet all costs of the admission yourself except those covered by Medicare.
For further information about being a self-funded patient, please contact our rooms.
Will an estimate be provided before my procedure?
Absolutely. For our private and self-funded patients wishing to have their procedure done at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital, we will provide an estimate for our surgeon’s fees. This will be in line with the schedule set by the Australian Medical Association.
